Appliances is a well documented treatment modality for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). There is a variety of different appliances that the clinician can choose according to the diagnosis and what the splint is expected to achieve. Therefore the dentists needs to be aware of the indications and contraindications of each appliance and of course its function, since an intaroral device can also cause much harm.
In this seminar we will focus on the stabilisation appliance which is the most widely used splint in modern dental clinical practice. When this appliance is placed intaorally, the condyles are moved to the centric relation position or otherwise in the musculoskeletal stable position. This is not only the most stable relation between the articular surfaces, where the operating forces of the stomatognathic system are distributed in the best way, but it is also the relation where the masticatory muscles are in their most relaxed position, and force are exerted only through their tone.
At the same time, digital dentistry is advancing rapidly. The advantages are major, the clinical and laboratory time is significantly less, the comfort for the patient is undoubtedly. As a result the final restorations are easily produced through CAD/CAM, quicker and predictable, providing at the same time an excellent fit. 3D printers allow us to fabricate and deliver in a very short time splints that need minimal adjustment. This all is possible with a couple of mouse clicks versus mounting stone models on articulators and trying to measure shifts that often are not even visible.
