El aparato de Herbst es un dispositivo de ortodoncia funcional diseñado para corregir maloclusiones de clase II. Fue desarrollado por el ortodoncista alemán Emil Herbst a principios del siglo XX. El Dr. Herbst presentó su diseño inicial en 1909 y luego perfeccionó el aparato a lo largo de los años. Su objetivo principal era abordar problemas como la mordida profunda y la retrusión mandibular.
El aparato de Herbst consiste en un sistema de bisagras y barras que conectan los molares superiores e inferiores, permitiendo un movimiento controlado de la mandíbula. La idea central detrás del diseño es estimular el crecimiento mandibular, corregir la posición de los dientes y mejorar la relación entre los maxilares.
